Sean and Katie are getting married next month and I can’t wait to photography their wedding.  They are getting married at The Point in Mooresville, which is one of my favorite places to shoot a wedding.  It is so cool, that it made sense to shoot their engagement photos there as well.  There are many cool places to take photographs there, so what we did was made sure to plan in a way as to not overlap too much with what I want to do on their wedding day.  I also enjoyed getting to know Sean and Katie better before their wedding and I realized that they are going to have lots next month.  They have great personalities and it really comes through in the photographs.  Without further delay…

I have been looking forward to posting this for the last month or so, but just have not had the chance until today.  I shoot many family portrait sessions in a given year, but I rarely shoot one as unique as the one I am featuring today.  Most shoots I do are in parks, fields, wooded areas, barns/stables, natural places, etc.  Outdoor shoots are always in daylight, usually in the evenings.  I often do traditional family sessions with backdrops, studio style lighting, etc.  Well, not this time!  The Burkett family wanted something different and they were not interested in the having a traditional setting.  Instead, they asked if I would shoot them under the city lights of downtown Charlotte at dusk and at night!  Heck yes I will!  What a cool idea, to do family shots as well as shots of the individual family members in a non-traditional setting.

So here is what I did.  The Burkett family met me around dusk so we could get a few shots with some light.  We then proceeded to walk around in a predetermined loop of downtown and stop at places I thought might be interesting for shots.  For most of the shots I used a small video light.  I also used off-camera flash and a softbox, although that proved difficult since it was unusually windy on that particular day.  Anyway, see for yourself, this was a really cool shoot.  A special thanks to the Burkett family for their suggestion and their willingness to do something different.  So here are some of my favorites:

I know I say “I love to do…”  quite often for just about everything photography related, but I must say I really enjoy bridal portrait session.  I think I like bridals for the same reason I like engagement sessions, in that it gives me an opportunity to get to know my client better and it gives them an opportunity to open up in front of the camera some before the wedding.  Besides the personal reasons, from a technical perspective, bridal sessions give me more freedom to try photography techniques that I cannot ordinarily do on wedding days.  For example, when I shoot bridals, I can do more complicated lighting setups that use softboxes, grids, beauty dishes, reflectors, etc.  I can take more time to light my client without having to worry so much about time constraints.  More importantly than that, I think it is important to document the most important person of all – the bride.

Here are a handful of images from a recent bridal session.  Rachel was a great sport, since she wanted a traditional bridal shoot, but did not mind a few more contemporary images taken during the session.  These images were taken at the chuch where she was to be married (More to come on that…!).  I love this session.  Great old church, wonderful window light to supplement my fill-light and reflectors and it has a fantastic courtyard for outdoor portraits.  I also was able to get some cool shot using my off-camera softbox.  Enjoy.

I had the pleasure of shooting a wedding for an awesome couple a few months ago and I wanted to share some of the images from that wedding.  Kyle and Christina are a super cool couple that were married on a Friday back in February.  By the way, if you are planning a wedding you should really consider doing it on a Friday.  I don’t exactly know why, but from my experience, Friday weddings are always more relaxed than Saturday weddings.  This wedding was no exception, as the couple and their guests had a great time from start to finish.

The wedding took place at St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville NC, and the reception took place at Northstone Country Club in Huntersville NC.  St. Therese is a great place for a wedding, as it has a wonderful sanctuary with high ceilings and beautiful stained glass windows.  Northstone Country Club is a venue I shoot at often and it has a great number of interesting places for photography and can accommodate large wedding parties.  It is a great place to have an outdoor wedding as well.

So here are some of my favorites from the day.
